Roller Derby is For Everyone!
Submitted by Cher Costea, skater with the Jerzey Derby Brigade
My name is Cher, yes like the singer. I am a Corporate Sales Manager at your local four star hotel. Every weekday morning, I put on my business suit, grab my coffee, and prepare myself for a day full of traffic, meetings, proposals, and client schmoozing. What do I do when 6 p.m. on a Friday rolls around? You probably would never guess that I head into Morristown and lace up my skates in preparation for roller derby practice with the Jerzey Derby Brigade, which will most likely bring me new bruises…all which will have to be covered come Monday.
My teammate Melissa is a stay at home mom. She goes to church every Sunday morning, can recite every line from every Disney movie, and is definitely a dog person. She is seen as quiet and reserved, but recently scored more points in the last bout than any other jammer on her roster.
Then there’s pink haired, tattooed Liz, who is finishing yet another year of college. Between finals and homework, she has to work a part-time job to support her full-time roller derby habit.
Roller Derby isn’t just for anyone, it’s for EVERYONE. Full-time moms, college students, lawyers, graphic artists, beauty queens—Morristown’s Jerzey Derby Brigade has them all. Each team member is so unique in career, background, and skill level, but when brought together are a force to be reckoned with.
